Let's imagine that tonight you're going out to eat. You've chosen a restaurant like Denny's. Denny's is a famous nationwide chain known for its simple, tasty and inexpensive meals.
At Denny's, as in most restaurants, you shouldn't just walk in and choose wherever you wish to sit down. A hostess¹ will greet you as soon as you enter and then seat you.
After the hostess has seated you, the waiter/waitress² comes by and, as is customary in restaurants like that, he/she serves you a glass of ice water. After giving you some time to study the menu, he/she'll ask you:
Can I take your order? / Are you ready to order yet?
Perhaps you still want some more time to study the menu. So you tell him/her:
Give me a few minutes more, please.
Finally, you order. In a short time, the waiter/waitress serves you the meal and with it, leaves the check on the table.
At this moment, you may think with yourself that they left the check because you're supposed that you are to eat your meal in a hurry and get out of the restaurant. Not at all. That is a customary procedure at places like Denny's. With the check already on the table, the customer avoids the inconvenience of having to track down³ his/her waiter/waitress to get it (the check) later.
You'll see that it's convenient for the customer because when you're ready to leave, you can just grab your check, walk up to the cashier, and pay.
It goes without saying that you may enjoy your meal at leisure and if you wish to order anything else, like dessert, the waiter/waitress will add that to your check.

Neste momento, você pode imaginar que eles deixaram a conta porque é para você comer sua refeição rapidamente e sair do restaurante. Não é por causa disso, todavia. Este é um procedimento de costume em lugares como o Denny's. Com a conta já na mesa, o cliente evita a iconveniência de ter de ficar atrás de seu graçom/sua garçonete para obter a conta depois.
Você verá que esta sistemática convém ao cliente pois, quando você estiver pronto para ir embora, é só você pegar sua conta, ir até o caixa e pagar.
Não é preciso dizer que você deve curtir sua refeição tranquilamente e, se desejar pedir mais alguma coisa, como uma sobremesa, o garçom/a garçonete irá adicionar o valor deste pedido à sua conta.
