3. Diferenças de Ortografia

O inglês britânico tem uma tendência a manter a ortografia de muitas palavras de origem francesa, enquanto os norte-americanos tentam escrever de um jeito mais próximo ao modo como eles pronunciam as palavras, e eles removem letras que não são necessárias.

Se acontecer de você estar lendo um jornal inglês e ver program escrito p-r-o-g-r-a-m-m-e, ou color escrito c-o-l-o-u-r, tenha certeza de que o que você viu não foi um erro de digitação ou o descuido de um revisor desleixado. O inglês britânico e o inglês americano possuem uma gama de diferenças ortográficas. As mais signifcativas são:

- Algumas palavras que terminam em -ter no inglês americano, como theater (teatro) ou center
(centro), são grafadas com -tre no inglês britânico: theatre, centre.

- Algumas palavras que terminam em -or  no inglês americano, como labor (trabalho) e honor  (honra), são grafadas com -our no inglês britânico, resultando em labour, honour.

- Muitos verbos terminados em -ize no inglês americano são geralmente grafados com -ise no inglês britânico. Assim, realize (perceber, dar-se conta) se torna realise.

- O -l final em palavras como travel (viajar) é repetido no inglês britânico, o que resulta em palavras como traveller e travelling.

- Algumas palavras terminadas em -og no inglês americano, como dialog (diálogo) e catalog (catálogo), são grafadas com -ogue no inglês britânico: dialogue, catalogue.

Differences in Spelling

British English has a tendency to keep the spelling of many words of French origin whereas Americans try to spell more closely to the way they pronounce words and they remove letters not needed.

If you happen to be reading an English newspaper and see program spelled p-r-o-g-r-a-m-m-e, or color spelled c-o-l-o-u-r rest assured that you haven't come across a typo or the work of a sloppy proofreader. British and American English have a number of spelling differences. Most note worthy are the following:

- Some words that end in -ter in American English like theater or center are spelled with -tre in British English: theatre, centre.

- Some words that end in -or in American English like labor or honor are spelled with -our in British English which gives us labour, honour.

- Many verbs ending in -ize in American English are often spelled with -ise in British English. Thus, realize, becomes realise. 

- The final -l in words like travel is doubled in British English to give us words like traveller and travelling.

- Some words ending in -og in American English such as dialog or catalog are spelled with -ogue in British English: dialogue, catalogue.
