Talking on the Telephone
When you're in another country, you'll notice that the way people talk to each other on the telephone is propably different than it is in your own country. That's why it is good to learn the country's "telephone etiquette" so you can make your calls more easily and avoid any possible misunderstandings between you and the other person on the other end of the line.
- If you call someone, don't ask the person who answers the phone who he nor she is, unless you first tell that person who you are and who you wish to speak to. It may sound offensive for who is hanging the phone on other end of the line, especially if the caller had not identified himself first.
- The person you're calling will answer the phone by saying hello (or just yeah? if the person's in a bad mood). You are then expected to state who you wish to speak to and identify yourself.
"I'd like to speak to Steve. This is his friend Cynthia from Brazil"
If you don't identify yourself, the person at the other end of the line will probably ask who you are. This might be because people are inundated daily by salespeople, prank callers, and all sorts of other unwanted calls. They want to make sure that you're not one of them (or, for that matter, their mother-in-law, boss, or landlord).
After you have identified yourself, the person on the other end will propably say something like this:
"Just a minute, I'll go see if he/she is there."
"Hang on (hold on) a second (sec), please."
"Yes, I'll go call him/her. One second (sec)."
If the person you want to speak to is not there, you may be asked if you wanted leave a message, that is, where and when you can be reached and why you called. Here's an example.
- Hi. This is Cynthia, is Steve there?
- No. he's not. Do you want to leave a message?
- Yes, just tell him I'll be at home tonight if he wants to get together.
